Tantalus the Red and Sisyphus the White : Manifestations of Power and Truth in “ The Second-to-the-Last Speech of the Red Indian to the White Man ” Masoud Hamdan The University of Haifa “ Narrating the Palestinian Story through the Narration of the Stories of Others” occupies an important position in Mahmoud Dawish’s collection Eleven Stars ( 1992 ) . This is especially true of the poem that is the subject of the present study , which constitutes a poetic attempt to reconstruct and reshape the collective memory . Our analysis of this poem focuses on the form of the con fl ict , repeated in numerous ways in different times and in different geographical regions , between two forces or vectors that represent two opposing poles in human history that exist in the spirit of civilization and the mind . These two vectors are uni fi cation ( the Tantalian element ) which strives to fuse and unite with the other and with nature and the cosmos , and divisiveness ( the Sisyphan element ) which , to the contrary , wishes to separate itself from the other and control him , nature and the cosmos by way of separation , classi fi cation and preference . This con fl ict , as we shall see , takes a number of forms : it is a con fl ict between spirit and matter , between nature and civilization , and between right and truth . The victorious vector builds its civilization upon the ruins of a primitive unity between the spirit and the place , which the poet imagines as clothed in the personality of a representative of the Red Indians .
