"Exposure" and "Punishment" in a Pales › nian Version Dialect and the Semio › c of Titles in Pales › nian Fic › on in Israel Mahmud Ghanayim Tel Aviv University This study aims at understanding the way the Pales › nian colloquial dialect and its various structures , be it expressions , proverbs or evoca › ons of a folk atmosphere , are used in the › tles of Pales › nian fi c › on in Israel . Our assump › on being that › tles cons › tute a very important textual threshold that makes it possible to expose various meanings when it is treated semio › cially , that is , as a semio › c sign containing symbolic meanings . Furthermore , the use of the colloquial , with its various func › ons and forms , o › en carries dis › nc › ve meanings for the history of literature , whether through the denota › on of a speci fi c › me period or by way of poin › ng to a certain school , a philosophy , or rallying to the banner of a certain ideology . As a result , this subject deserves to be studied from a synchronic perspec › ve , in order to understand the func › on of the colloquial language in › tles , and from a diachronic perspec › ve , in order to follow the evolu › on of the literary , social and poli › cal views under whose banner this literature was wri › en . The present study does not limit itself to the pair paratext and text . Rather , it deals with the issue in three dimensions : Paratext : › tle , text : content , . and out-of-text : context Because the subject is so broad , we have chosen in the present ar › cle to focus on a preliminary selec › on of fi ve literary works that represent most schools of wri › ng and genera › ons .
