Surrealist Aspects in Modern Arabic Poetry : tartila muba › thara and huwiyya by Unsi al-Haj Amina Hassan The Arabic Language Academy , Haifa Surrealism , a movement that surfaced in France in the early twenties , is considered one of the most prominent social and artistic movements not only in France but in the whole world . This movement appeared as a reaction to the harsh and ambiguous reality left by the World War I ; a reality moreover , that does not give the human being his appropriate importance . Therefore , Surrealism’s main persistence was complete devotion to the human being , and the ful fi llment of his aspired freedom . Here is where the operation of this movement begins , leaving marks on different fi elds , such as art and literature , which is our main interest at the moment ; leading us to say that Surrealism has contributed towards putting literature on a modern path , a contribution the echoes of which have long since crossed the borders of France and reached other countries including the Arab world . This study attempts to identify the effects of the Surrealistic movement on the modern Arabic poetry . Therefore , we see fi t to fi rst present the merits of this movement ; among which are its pioneers , fi rst manifest , and the characteristics of the poem , which is where our interest lies . After that we dealt with the signs of its appearance in the Arab world , and the socio-cultural circumstances that prepared the fi eld for its reception and practice whether be it in art or literature , taking into consideration that it has not been practiced “ to the letter” in the Arab world as is the case in France , for socio-political and religious reasons . In order to understand the surrealist aspects of the Arabic poem , we see fi t to focus on the study and analysis of two poems created by the Lebanese poet Unsi al-Haj , who is considered to be the fi rst Arab poet to write his poems under the in fl uence of Surrealism , due to his exposure to the French culture and the in fl uence that Surrealistic notable personages of the time had on him .
