Hybrid Language in Yusuf › Idris ’ Fiction Sasson Somekh Tel Aviv University Yusuf › Idris ( 1927-1991 ) , an Egyptian novelist and playwright , was one of the most daring of modern Arab writers in the use of › ammiyya ( colloquial ) in his books . His attraction to the colloquial is not limited to his abundant recourse to it in his dialogue , but the narrative section of his stories are often permeated with colloquialism . Somekh’s article discusses some textual segments in › Idris’s works wherein › ammiyya is blended with fusha ( the formal or literary language ) with the purpose of re fl ecting different modes of speech , but also for sake of creating ironic * * * Science Fiction : Nature , Genres and Function Isam Asaqleh The Arabic Academic College , Haifa This study analyzes the concept of “ science fi ction” as it has evolved from the 1930 s to today . The term “ science fi ction” has never been satisfactorily de fi ned , despite the great amount of research that has been done on it . As a concept it has remained blurred ; some take it as going back into antiquity , where it becomes indistinguishable from legend and superstition , while others have associated it with modern science and technology . According to some researchers science fi ction is a literary genre based on imaginary futuristic scienti fi c inventions and developments , especially in connection with space travel , time travel , life on other planets , encounters with other life forms , and various doomsday scenarios such as World War III , an attack by aliens or dangerous microbes , or visits by human-like or strange-looking creatures from outer space . According to others , science fi ction is a genre that deals in a fi ctional manner with the way humans respond to scienti fi c and technological innovations in the near or far future , as well as with how mankind would react to fi nding life on other planets and the kind of life we can expect to evolve here on earth in the wake of scienti fi c and technological advances . This kind of literature can also serve as a mask for political satire or for re fl ections on the secrets of life and theology .
