ideology and work and while strengthening his legacy . Dr . Mar’i was one of the first Palestinians in Israel to courageously carry the torch of development and research within Arab society . As an educator , an educational researcher and an idealist , he was an enlightening and critical force within his sphere of influence . Dr . Mar’i was born in 1940 in the village of Ar’ara , where he subsequently completed elementary school . His secondary studies took place , initially , in Nazareth , and then in Bak’a el Garbia . Dr . Mar’i then embarked on a B . A . in Hebrew literature and psychology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . He continued on to receive an M . A . ( with honors ) , also at Hebrew university . His thesis focused on education for creativity . Dr . Mar’i then attended the University of Wisconsin , obtaining a PhD in psychology . Upon returning to his homeland , he was employed by the University of Haifa as a senior lecturer in education and psychology . Among other activities , he was a driving force behind establishment of The Research and Development Institute of Arab Education , a flagship institution in developing Arab education at the structural and conceptual levels . The Institute’s work emphasizes language and identity and the role of education professionals in shaping the identity of Arab Students . Dr . Mar’i passed away in April 1986 , at only 46 years of age , leaving behind a wife , Maream , and two children , Khalil and Rasha . His legacy in the professional sphere was rich ; he developed a clear educational and civil doctrine enhanced by relevant research . He was instrumental in establishing the Al Haraka Altaqadomia [ Peace and Justice Movement for Reform ] . Furthermore , he promoted the establishment of an Arab university and a center for Arab heritage while establishing parks in Acre , his town of residence and Ar’ara , his birthplace .
