Toponyms in Our Country : Between Past and Present Rassem Khamaisi The University of Haifa In this study we will try to shed light on the dialectic relationship between toponymy and the Arabic language in Israel , focusing on names of places whose identity was changed through a change in the dominant language and presented in public space . We monitor the alteration of geographical names through a process of giving geographical features , roads and other sites in the country Jewish and Israeli names , and analyze the motives behind this change and the mechanisms used to bring it about . This change of names re fl ects a geopolitical ideology that seeks to establish the right of ownership of the space and to determine its membership . The article thus tries to show the policy and practice of changing names of locations in Mandate Palestine , and later in the State of Israel , giving examples of cities , villages and other geographical places . The article begin with a general theoretical framework of toponymy and linguistic landscape , explains the origins of names , toponyms and their relationship to culture and the role of power in changing the linguistic landscape , and then tries to analyses the situation and the reality of Arabic toponyms . It discusses and reviews the literature on the relationship of language and power and geopolitical con fl ict in communities . It studies the evolution of mapping and labeling of sites and provides a case study of renamed geographic sites , roads and some Arab towns . In addition to explaining the transformation of toponyms as part of a policy of Hebraizing the map of the country , the article proposes policy guidelines and tools to cope with the Hebraization of place names and to ensure the survival of Arabic toponyms .
