Fallen Masks in Fa › ila al-Farouq’s Novel Districts of Fear Mohammad Saffouri The Arabic Academic College , Haifa The article deals with the contents and artistic devices employed in Districts of Fear , a novel by the Algerian woman writer Fa › ila al-Farouq . The novel is characterized by a pluralistic approach on the thematic and aesthetic levels , addressing themes which have been taboo for Arab women and are known as the forbidden triple , namely religion , politics , and sex . The novel lifts the mask of the Orient and describes the corruption that is prevalent in the Arab world , the state of instability which people experience . as a result of their rights being violated On the aesthetic level the novel undermines patriarchal literary conventions by employing devices like defamiliarization of plot and structure , fi rst person female narration , and incorporating a variety of linguistic styles such as reported speech , romantic and poetic language , sexual language , and dialect . Al-Farouq relies heavily on the techniques of fl ashback and fl ash-forward , and historical documentation of the novel’s events , in addition to other artistic devices which make Districts of Fear an outstanding feminine novel which achieves the aim of modern Arabic feminine fi ction : resisting and undermining the patriarchal literary canon and establishing a new one in which women have their own literary conventions .
