Death in Arabic Children’s Literature Hanan Karkaby-Jaraisy , Rafe ‘ Yehya The Arabic Academic College , Haifa Since Arabic children’s literature began to acknowledge and adopt the “ child in the centre” concept , psychological issues related to children’s everyday lives have become increasingly prominent in local publications for children . Death , like other complicated and sensitive themes , was absent from children literature and neglected , or rather ignored , by writers of children’s literature for a long time . One of the arguments raised against exposing children to death in children’s literature was that this literature’s main role was to protect children from the world’s more unpleasant aspects by promoting optimism and humor . However , Arabic children’s literature has recently abandoned this approach in favor of one that directly addresses death , mainly for therapeutic purposes . The theme of death in Arabic children’s literature has come to be treated with remarkable frequency in recent years , in fl uenced by three main factors : mentions of death in the media ; rising awareness among educators , and , in addition , children’s increasing exposure to news about death and death scenes in the media and in their close environment , something that adults are unable to prevent .
