debate among literary critics . His opinions had many supporters and also many opponents . During his literary career he was the object of severe accusations . Some claimed that he was an enemy of Arab culture , that he displayed an arrogant attitude toward Arab writers , that he showed little interest in the problems of Arab society , and that he glori fi ed Western culture and betrayed his own ; others accused him of having destroyed the poetic nature of modern Arabic poetry with his extreme ideas on literary creativity and the need for modernization . Other critics , however , argued that Ad › n › s was devoted to the Arab nation and legacy , and that his revolt against traditional poetry was essential in light of the negative elements in Arab culture , and was part of an attempt to illuminate and develop its positive sides . Finally , quite a few critics have maintained that both al- ‘› lim and Ad › n › s helped promote criticism of modern Arabic literature . However , almost as many critics have accused these two of having destroyed that same literature . According to the approach taken in the present study , the debate between these two groups is legitimate , because innovation will necessarily lead to a change in perspectives in the Arab world , with various implications and meanings . It is dif fi cult to fi nd sweeping agreements on any one topic , especially where cultural legacy is concerned . We may assume that any new idea will have supporters who promote it and detractors who try to stop it , even if the innovation in question was proposed for the purpose of correcting a perceived shortcoming .
