Final Versions and Meaning Change : The Example of Mahmoud Darwish Hussain Hamzah The Academic Arab College of Educa › on , Haifa The poet Mahmoud Darwish made some changes in his published texts , in order to re fi ne his poe › c oeuvre . I therefore worked with his previous printed edi › on , which may be deemed a working dra › of his subsequent publica › on . Darwish was always careful to preserve the esthe › cs of his poe › c forms . He balanced his na › onal and his esthe › c commitments , but the la › er always predominated in his poetry , as he himself admi › ed quite explicitly , and as the present study also demonstrates . The modi fi ca › ons or correc › ons that Darwish made in his poetry involved changing the › tles of his poems , paratext , replacing words , changing the orders of the lines , and addi › ons . The main mo › va › on for these changes was esthe › c ; only few changes were made for poli › cal or religious considera › ons . Darwish did not modify only his wri › en dra › s , but also make changes in vocaliza › on in his published edi › ons . As a result I treated the readings as Darwish's "illegi › mate fi nal texts" , and explained the mo › va › ons behind these changes . In addi › on , Darwish made a third change , namely eliding some of his poetry collec › on , which thus did not enter his Complete Works . The ques › on which thus arises , and which I studied , is : What is the dialec › cs of the rela › onship between Darwish's various modi fi ca › ons and the formula › on of meaning as the message that the poet tries to convey to the addressee ? My reading of the changes that Darwish made is not de fi ni › ve , only probable . Certainly in some details it may change with the changes in reading , so that the reading of the text becomes non- fi nal , so that it also may undergo changes in future readings .
