"Al-Shaykh Mabr › k" Between Mimicry and Crea › veness Jeries Naim Khoury Tel Aviv University This study examines "Al-Shaykh Mabr › k" , a story by the Pales › nian writer Mu › ammad Sa ›› d , in an a › empt to illuminate some of its par › cular features as well as the wider in fl uence of Arabic fi c › on on it . Arabic fi c › on seems to have deeply affected the structure of this story , to the point clichéd . The writer was a member of rendering certain parts of it quite a commi › ee that was asked to design the curriculum in Arabic literature for the Arabic high schools in Israel . It seems that such contact with Arabic fi c › on greatly in fl uenced Sa ›› d’s . The study shows that Sa ›› d's work contains structural elements , which he adopts from three different Arabic stories : 1- "Al-N › s" by Y › suf Idr › s ; 2- "Nakhla › ala al-Jadwal" by al- Tayib › ali ›; 3- "Qand › l Umm H › shim" by Ya › ya › aqq › . These three stories deal with broad social ques › ons which concerned the Arab writers , especially during the 1950 ’s . Sa ›› d uses sophis › cated techniques in order to make the story look different . For example he resorts to using more than one voice at the same › me , transmi › ng the same event or scene through three dimensions , interrup › ng the event or speech by exposing comments that the dominant character said or thought about . Sa ›› d thus really succeeds in producing a special and signi fi cant story . He struggles to make the con fl ict between the new and the old genera › ons in this story appear more severe and complicated than the con fl icts in the three aforemen › oned stories . Sa ›› d accomplishes this complexity of con fl ict by having the characters run a direct dialogue among them , through which he exposes the story’s whole idea and signi fi cance . Despite Sa ›› d’s a › empt to conceal the sources that in fl uenced him using more sophis › cated plot and narra › on techniques , the presence of Idr › s's ( and the other men › oned Arab writers' ) style remains unmistakable
