communist party , but their real in fl uence was very little . Its in fl uence increased in the Seventies of the last century . When the military government was cancelled they . began to publish their books 2 . Muhammad ‘ Ali Taha ( b . 1941 ) is the representative of the second stream which falls under the same school of realistic social concept . The literature of this trend was published in the Seventies . It is easy to say that this literary product does not play any role in changing the Palestinian society in the period of the military government . Furthermore it is obvious that this literature tries to rebuild a mythical-literary world , or , in other words , to produce a retroactive roll about absent circumstances . But it is right to say that the function of this literature is standing ; it is directed to the new generation who did not live under the military government . 3 . In the recent years , in the Eighties and the Nineties , another stream represented by Mustafa Murrar ( b . 1930 ) began to act . Murrar and other writers lived under the mili- tary government , but they did not publish any story about this subject . This group’s common purpose , if it can be said to have one , may be primarily to air latent feelings which its members were unable to express at the time . However , the in fl ammatory aims of the second group are here entirely absent . * * * Mahmud Darwish , Journalist , Intellectual and Shaper of Public Opinion ( 1958-1970 ) Mustafa Kabha The Open University & Tel Aviv University This article deals with one aspect of Mahmud Darwish’s work , namely his activity as journalist , and the in fl uence which this activity had on shaping the opinions of his target readership in the historical period and context in which he wrote his prose and poetic texts . This is an aspect of Darwish’s writing that has so far been more-or-less ignored by scholars and writers , who have focused more on his surpassing poetry . The time period which the article covers extends from the end of the 1950 s ( when his fi rst verses were published in the Arabic press ) to the beginning of the 1970 s ( when he left the country ) , and focuses on his journalistic work for the Communist press , such as the newspaper al-Ittihad and the magazine al-Jadid . At fi rst Darwish published his writings in numerous different papers . He wrote poems ,
