At the beginning of the 1960 s he had yet to demonstrate any preference for a speci fi c ideological trend , at least to judge by his choice . of platforms for the publication of his writings Darwish’s path towards Communism began hesitantly , with the publication of a poem of his , entitled “ Tremors” , in the newspaper al-Ittihad in August 1958 . He then stopped publishing until August 1961 , when he began to be employed as a writer and editor at al- Ittihad and al-Jadid . In the latter he published an article , entitled “ On Poetry” , the fi rst of thirty-seven contributions to al-Jadid , in addition to more than two-hundred contributions to al-Ittihad , in the form of poems and prose texts consisting of editorials , articles and reports , which bore clear identifying features that played a role in shaping public opinion among the national Palestinian Arab minority in Israel . Darwish’s newspaper articles are as original as his poetry . He began his journalistic work at the start of his career and continued this kind of writing throughout his life . He wrote not only on literature , but on all aspects of life , so that his writings for the press in the period in question may well constitute an important source for the study of the life of the Arab national minority in Israel and its political and cultural evolution in that time .
